Barbara Kruger, Untitled (Your Body is a Battleground), 1989, silkscreen on vinyl, 112 x 112 inches
Your writing is graded on effort, clarity, and whether you address the question or prompt of the assignment. Use the vocabulary from the readings and lectures. Craft your statements so they are concise, informed and powerful. Here are some examples.
Does not meet expectations:
The style of Kruger's image is amazing. I love how the picture is simple and black and white and there is the bold red lettering on top. It really makes the statement stand out.
Satisfies expectations:
The image is split down the middle, the left side is a normal photograph and the right side has the opposite tones. This distortion on the right side makes that side look spooky and scary. Because the image is split, it’s like she has two personalities. The image has a simple statement on it, loud and clear, like an advertisement.
Exceeds expectations:
Kruger's photos are expressed mostly in power colors: red, black, and white. The high contrast gives off a sharp, bold impression. The left side of the face has an expression that is confident, condemning and confrontational. The expression on the right side is less clear, and the split makes the face seem like it is falling apart or broken. Like the text says, her body is a site where outside forces do battle, and she is not in control.
